Transforming car rentals with a fully mobile experience

When Dockx Rental, a Belgian car rental company, started looking for a new digital partner, their goal wasn’t to enable new features they didn’t have before, their existing app already offered a fully mobile rental journey. Instead, they wanted to future-proof their digital offering and work with a partner who could think along with them, challenge their ideas, and bring the mobile expertise needed to develop quickly. Together with icapps, they built a brand-new app from scratch, packed with smart integrations and a sleek new design.

Challenge

Dockx Rental wanted to future-proof their mobile offering and work with a partner who could think along with them, challenge their ideas, and bring the expertise to develop quickly. Their existing app already enabled customers to complete the entire rental journey via smartphone, but integration complexity, scalability limitations, and outdated UX/UI were holding them back from delivering the experience their users deserved.

Key pain points included:

  • Missing integrations with new smart locks and ID verification tools.

The solution

From the very first meeting, it was clear: this wasn’t about patching up an old app. Dockx Rental needed a fresh start.

To meet Dockx Rental’s ambitions, we built a completely new app from scratch, using Flutter to ensure cross-platform efficiency and a modern user experience. The app is designed to replace the old one and offer a truly mobile-first approach, from booking to opening the car door.

  • Customers can now search locations, reserve vehicles, and unlock their car via smart locks, all in one seamless flow.

  • ID and license scanning is fully integrated, using a third-party verification tool.

  • The backend ties directly into ProPlanner, while remaining flexible enough to grow with future needs.

Our approach

We kicked off the collaboration with a strategic workshop, bringing Dockx Rental’s key stakeholders and our own experts around the table. What did customers want? Where did the current flow break down? What would a frictionless mobile journey look like?

From there, our UX and UI designer set to work creating wireframes and prototypes. At the same time, our developers began building out the Flutter architecture, with native code bridges to handle the integration of two new smart lock providers.

Some challenges, like syncing with ProPlanner’s APIs, took patience and persistence. But by staying flexible and keeping close contact, we made it work.

We experienced some technical challenges along the way, but icapps clearly followed the well-known Ted Lasso principle: “Don’t fight back, fight forward.” Whatever the obstacle, they always found a way forward.

The outcome

A new app that does more than just meet expectations, it redefines the customer experience. Customers can find a vehicle, verify their identity, unlock the doors, and drive away without visiting a desk, downloading multiple tools, or making a phone call.

And while the previous app already made headlines for its early innovation, the new version is more polished, more powerful, WCAG compliant and built to scale!
